Elizabeth sits on the floor in front of the fire with a blanket on her trying to warm herself up.She sits watching the flames move in the fire pit. "This is nice." She says moving closer to the fire. After a few minutes, she sits on the settee because she has warmed up.
Mother comes in the room and pours Elizabeth a cup of tea. "Thank you." As she sits there drinking the tea, mother goes over to her and tries to talk to her. "How's your friend Deborah?" Mother asked sitting down next to her."She's good! She's working on a piece of art she's calling--- They both hear Jacks coughs in the bedroom and mother needs to take care of him.
Mother runs in and gives Jack more tea to drink. "Jack are you feeling any better?" Mother asks. Jack looks at her and nods a yes. She lights a candle in his room so he can see. He is pale with a red nose. He is very weak also."Would you like me to sit with you for a little while?" Mother asks sitting on the corner of his bed. "Sure." He says with a loud cough.
At 10pm, Jack decides to sleep and give mother a break. "Good night Jack. Sleep tight." Mother says kissing his cheek. She leaves the room and goes and talks to Elizabeth in the living room. She sees her sitting on the settee writing in her diary. "Out of ink again." Elizabeth mumbles.
"Elizabeth what are you doing?" Mother asks sitting down next to her. Elizabeth is startled and slams her diary closed. Mother sees the fright in her eyes and apologies for scaring her. They both sit in the living room and talk about girly things for about two and a half hours. "Do you want to help me take care of Jack?" Mother asks Elizabeth. "Of course I would, I love Jack and I would help him any way I can." Elizabeth says excitedly. "Let's check on Jack and see how he's doing.
When they get to the bedroom, they walk in quietly because he is sleeping. Mother walks over to him and tells Elizabeth to stay where she's at."Mother I left something in the living room." Elizabeth says while she leaves the bedroom. Mother looks over and shakes her head and smiles. Then she goes down near Jack and tries to wake him up. "Jack it's time for your tea and if you are alright, someone wants to see you before she goes to bed." Mother says pouring his tea. He wakes up rubbing the sleep out if his eyes. "Ok I wonder who it is?" Jack replies with a yawn. "I'll go get her." Mother says helping Jack sit up in his bed. He is still very sick but he would do anything to see his sister. He loves her very much and he would not be the same without her.
"Elizabeth, Jack's ready to see you now. He sounds excited." Mother says. "Ok I'm excited too."
Elizabeth walks with a book that is the large book of fairytales. It has stories about fairies, princesses, and the 'big four'. "Hi Jack! How are you?" Elizabeth asks Jack. Jack looks at her and Elizabeth can tell that he can't really talk as well because he has a bad cough and his throat is sore. He waves to her and points to the book."Do you want me to read you a story?" Elizabeth asks Jack. He nods and takes the book and looks at the stories. "This one." Jack says with a scratchy voice.
Elizabeth looks at the page and its the story about the 'big four'. "Hmm I've never read this story before." Elizabeth says turning to the page. "Ok I found it. I'll start reading when you're ready." She says with a yawn. "Lizzie, you don't have to read if you don't want to. You seem tired." Jack says with a cough clearing his throat so his voice isn't scratchy. "Lizzie? I love that nickname!" Elizabeth says excitedly. "I'll start reading now."
